Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ıvır zıvır sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan kesik polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok adetda polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). üs başkalık peptitlerin kesik, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, sair amino asite sabah akşam, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid örgüsına yeğinlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine yeğinlan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, erkin amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin sair ucundaki erkin α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
